The Sri Yantra (श्री यन्त्र) is the most revered and complex yantra in all of Tantra — a geometric representation of the entire cosmos and the journey of consciousness from the manifest to the unmanifest. It is the central object of worship in the Sri Vidya tradition, considered the highest and most refined form of Tantric practice.

Sri Yantra — nine interlocking triangles forming 43 smaller triangles, with a central bindu point representing ultimate consciousness

Geometry of the Sri Yantra

The Sri Yantra consists of 9 interlocking triangles that radiate from a central point (bindu):

  • 4 upward-pointing triangles = Shiva (masculine, consciousness)
  • 5 downward-pointing triangles = Shakti (feminine, energy)

These create 43 smaller triangles that form the body of the yantra, surrounded by lotus petal circles and a square outer boundary (bhupura).

The Nine Enclosures — नव आवरण

#NameShapeMeaning
1BhupuraSquare outer boundary with 4 gatesThe material world; gateway into sacred space
2Trailokya Mohana16-petal outer lotus"Enchantress of the Three Worlds" — fulfillment of desire
3Sarva Asha Paripuraka8-petal inner lotus"Fulfiller of All Hopes" — deeper satisfaction
4Sarva Saubhagya Dayaka14 triangles (outer ring)"Giver of All Auspiciousness"
5Sarvartha Sadhaka10 triangles (outer)"Accomplisher of All Purposes"
6Sarva Rakshakara10 triangles (inner)"Protector of All"
7Sarva Rogahara8 triangles"Remover of All Disease" — healing
8Sarva Siddhi PradaPrimary triangle"Giver of All Powers" — the inner sanctum
9Sarva AnandamayaBindu (center point)"Full of All Bliss" — the source/goal of everything

The Sri Vidya Tradition — श्री विद्या

Sri Vidya ("The Auspicious Knowledge") is widely considered the highest, most refined, and most systematic form of Tantric worship. Its central deity is Lalita Tripurasundari — "The Beautiful Goddess of the Three Worlds."

The Panchadashi Mantra — पञ्चदशी

The principal mantra of Sri Vidya: a 15-syllable code of cosmic vibration. Three groups of five syllables each represent the descent and re-ascent of consciousness.

GroupNameRepresents
Vagbhava Kuta5 syllablesThe power of Speech/Creation — head of the Goddess
Kamaraja Kuta5 syllablesThe power of Desire/Will — torso of the Goddess
Shakti Kuta5 syllablesThe power of Action/Manifestation — lower body of the Goddess

The actual syllables of the Panchadashi are traditionally transmitted only through diksha (initiation). Published versions often contain deliberate inaccuracies to preserve the sanctity of the transmission.

Major Sri Vidya Lineages

LineageBaseApproach
Hayagriva LineKanchi and Sringeri MathasSamaya (internal) — the purest form, purely meditative
Dakshinamurti LineVarious South Indian centersBlended rituals and meditation
Annapurna LineVarious regional traditionsMore ritual-oriented Kaula elements

Sri Chakra Puja — The Navavarana Puja

The elaborate worship of the Sri Yantra, proceeding through all nine enclosures — from the outermost square boundary inward to the bindu (central point). It is a complete spiritual journey performed as ritual. The full puja includes mantra, mudra, nyasa, and offerings at each of the nine levels, culminating in meditation at the bindu.

Mathematical Significance

The Sri Yantra's geometry has fascinated mathematicians:

  • The precise intersection of 9 triangles creating exactly 43 sub-triangles requires extraordinary geometric precision
  • Computer analysis has confirmed the extreme difficulty of constructing this figure — the tolerances are minute
  • The ratios within the yantra approximate the Golden Ratio (phi) and other significant mathematical constants
  • Cymatic experiments show that certain frequencies produce patterns resembling the Sri Yantra
