Tantra posits that beyond the physical body (sthula sharira, स्थूल शरीर), humans possess a subtle body (sukshma sharira, सूक्ष्म शरीर) composed of energy channels (nadis), energy centers (chakras), and vital life-force (prana). This subtle anatomy is the primary field of Tantric practice.

The Nadi System — नाड़ी

Nadis are subtle energy channels through which prana (life-force) flows. They are NOT physical nerves or blood vessels, but pathways in the energy body (pranamaya kosha). Traditional texts count 72,000 nadis pervading the subtle body.

The Three Principal Nadis

NadiSideEnergyQualityBrainNervous System
Ida (इडा)LeftLunar (Chandra)Cooling, calming, introspectiveRight hemisphereParasympathetic
Pingala (पिंगला)RightSolar (Surya)Heating, activating, extrovertedLeft hemisphereSympathetic
Sushumna (सुषुम्ना)CentralNeutral / TranscendentPathway of spiritual ascensionBoth hemispheresBeyond duality

Ida and Pingala spiral around the Sushumna in a double-helix pattern, crossing at each major chakra — remarkably similar to the Caduceus symbol and DNA structure. In most people, prana flows predominantly through Ida or Pingala, alternating throughout the day. Sushumna is normally dormant — prana only enters it when Ida and Pingala are perfectly balanced. The goal of pranayama and Tantric practice is to balance Ida/Pingala and open Sushumna. Modern science has confirmed the existence of a nasal cycle (alternating nostril dominance every 90–120 minutes) that parallels this teaching.

Nadi Shuddhi — Purification of Channels

Nadi Shodhana Pranayama (Alternate Nostril Breathing) is the foundational practice:

  1. Close right nostril → Inhale through left (Ida)
  2. Close both nostrils → Hold (Kumbhaka)
  3. Close left nostril → Exhale through right (Pingala)
  4. Inhale through right (Pingala)
  5. Hold
  6. Exhale through left (Ida)
  7. This is one cycle. Repeat.

This systematically purifies and balances the two main channels, preparing the way for Kundalini ascent.

The Seven Major Chakras — सप्त चक्र

Chakras (चक्र, "wheels") are vortices of energy located at specific points along the Sushumna nadi. They are intersections where multiple nadis converge, creating concentrated energy centers.

The seven chakra energy system — from Muladhara at the base to Sahasrara at the crown, connected by the Sushumna, Ida, and Pingala nadis

GlandThymus

The bridge between lower (material) and upper (spiritual) chakras. The seat of the Jivatman (individual soul). Contains the mystical Anahata Nada — the unstruck primordial sound. This is the primary focus of the Mishra tradition.

5. Vishuddhi — विशुद्धि — Throat Chakra

GlandThyroid

The center of purification. When awakened, one can discern and "digest" both positive and negative experiences without harm.

6. Ajna — आज्ञा — Third Eye Chakra

AttributeDetail

ElementMind (beyond 5 elements)
Bija MantraOM (ॐ)
Petals2 (white/indigo)
GovernsIntuition, insight, command, higher perception
GlandPineal gland

The "command center" — where the Guru's instructions are received internally. Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna merge here. Beyond duality.

7. Sahasrara — सहस्रार — Crown Chakra

AttributeDetail
LocationCrown of the head / slightly above
ElementBeyond elements — Pure Consciousness
Bija MantraSilence
Petals1,000 (all colors / white light)
GovernsEnlightenment, cosmic consciousness, transcendence
GlandPituitary gland

The seat of Shiva — pure consciousness. When Kundalini reaches here, Shiva and Shakti unite, and the practitioner experiences Samadhi — the state of absolute unity and liberation. This is the primary focus of the Samaya tradition.

Kundalini Shakti — कुण्डलिनी शक्ति

Kundalini (कुण्डलिनी, "the coiled one") is a dormant spiritual energy that lies at the base of the spine in the Muladhara chakra. It is described as a serpent coiled 3½ times around the Svayambhu Linga (the self-born symbol of Shiva).

The Five Stages of Kundalini Awakening

PhaseNameDescription
1. DormancySushuptiKundalini sleeps, blocking the entrance to Sushumna. Most humans live their entire lives in this state. Energy flows only through Ida and Pingala.
2. StirringPrerakaThrough practice, Kundalini begins to vibrate. Practitioner may experience heat, trembling, spontaneous movements, and brief moments of expanded awareness.
3. AwakeningUtthanaKundalini uncoils and enters Sushumna nadi. Pierces through each chakra. Each opening brings specific experiences and abilities. Intense physical, emotional, and psychic phenomena.
4. AscentArohanProgressive rise through all seven chakras. Each level reveals deeper dimensions of consciousness. Three major "knots" (Granthis) must be pierced.
5. UnionYogaKundalini reaches Sahasrara. Shiva and Shakti unite — the cosmic marriage. Experience of Samadhi — ultimate liberation.

The Three Granthis — Psychic Knots

Three major "knots" (ग्रन्थि) block the Kundalini's ascent. Each represents a fundamental attachment that must be transcended:

GranthiLocationBlocksLiberation Through
Brahma GranthiMuladhara–ManipuraAttachment to physical world, body, securityTranscending material attachments
Vishnu GranthiAnahata–VishuddhiAttachment to emotional bonds, compassion-trapTranscending personal love to universal love
Rudra GranthiAjna–SahasraraAttachment to psychic powers, visions, spiritual prideSurrendering all powers for pure awareness

⚠️ Safety Warning

Kundalini awakening without proper preparation and guru guidance can be dangerous. Premature or forced awakening is associated with severe physical, psychological, and emotional disturbance — documented in modern psychiatry as "Kundalini Syndrome." The tradition unanimously emphasizes:

  1. Ethical purification first — Strong moral foundation (yama/niyama)
  2. Physical preparation — Hatha Yoga to strengthen the body
  3. Nadi purificationPranayama to cleanse energy channels
  4. Guru guidance — A qualified teacher must supervise the process
  5. Gradual approach — Slow, steady practice over years, not forced shortcuts

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 7 chakras in Tantra?

The seven major chakras are: Muladhara (Root, base of spine), Swadhisthana (Sacral), Manipura (Solar Plexus), Anahata (Heart), Vishuddhi (Throat), Ajna (Third Eye, between eyebrows), and Sahasrara (Crown). Each has a specific element, bija mantra, color, and governing function in the subtle energy body.

What is the difference between a nadi and a nerve?

Nadis are energy channels in the subtle body (pranamaya kosha), not physical structures. While science has noted correlations between certain nadis and parts of the nervous system — for example, the nasal cycle confirming alternating Ida/Pingala dominance — nadis belong to a different framework of understanding the body's energy architecture.

Can Kundalini awakening be dangerous?

Yes, if pursued without proper preparation and guidance. Modern psychiatry documents "Kundalini Syndrome" — involuntary movements, emotional instability, and altered states. The Tantric tradition insists on ethical preparation, physical conditioning, nadi purification, and guru supervision before any Kundalini practices.
